Jalal-Abad City Tour: Soviet-Style Sanitorium, Bazaar and Family Lunch
Experience the best of Jalal-Abad city in just a few hours and hear fascinating stories about the city that you will never discover in any guidebook. You'll have an opportunity to visit the Soviet-style sanatorium surrounded by a pistachio grove with a beautiful panoramic view of the city, explore our colorful and sprawling bazaar (central market) and enjoy a home-cooked meal in a local family home. Your local English-speaking guide will provide a personal look into daily life and share the town's diverse history and its development after the Soviet Union. Highlights:
- Jalal-Abad Sanitorium: Visit the Soviet-style sanatorium (spa) on a hill with beautiful panoramic views of the city. This was the first sanatorium in Kyrgyzstan and it became famous, especially during the Soviet Union, because of the natural mineral water springs and mud baths. During your free time here you can wander around the pistachio grove, drink the mineral waters, or book a massage or mineral water bath (additional fee).
- Central Bazaar: Enjoy the bright colors, smells, sounds and chaos as we walk through our vibrant central bazaar (market) filled with piles of fresh vegetables, dried fruits, nuts, spices and traditional clothing, souvenirs and much more.
- Lunch with a local family: After learning about all the local foods at the bazaar, enjoy a home-cooked lunch at the home of an ethnic Uzbek family.

Jalal-Abad City Foodie Tour
We put a local twist on the regular food tour by going to family homes to try different local dishes instead of to restaurants. This allows you to not only to sample four different home-cooked local traditional dishes, which is usually best anyway, but it also provides you an opportunity to meet several families and understand better local culture. You'll emerge from this immersive culinary experience with locals with a deep understanding of Central Asian cuisine, including some Jalal-Abad specialties. Note: A vegetarian version is available upon request. Please let us know in advance.
Highlights:
- Mash-Kordo and Manty (First Family): Be welcomed into an ethnic Uzbek family home and relax at the tapchan, a traditional Central Asian raised table. You'll have an opportunity to sample homemade mash-kordo (a traditional soup) and manty (dumplings filled with either meat or pumpkin). Be sure not to eat too much as we still have another family to visit and more dishes to try.
- Lagman and Shashlik (Second Family): Enjoy experiencing more local hospitality at a second family home where you will get to sample homemade lagman (hand-pulled noodles with meat and vegetables) and shashlik (grilled meat skewers).
- Local connection: Your family hosts will tell you the background of these dishes and local stories as you enjoy these delicious home-cooked dishes. They love learning about you as well, so be sure to have some of your own stories ready to tell.

Bread-Making Workshop and Lunch, Jalal-Abad City
Learn how to make and bake traditional tandyr (tandoor) oven bread in a local Uzbek family home and enjoy eating the bread you've made fresh from the oven as part of a family lunch. On this tour you will go to a local expert baker's home and learn all the secrets of making this delicious local bread -- preparing the dough, kneading and shaping, decorating the circular loaves, and placing them in the tandyr (oven). As you wait for the dough to rise you'll have an opportunity to explore the pistachio groves and Jalal-Abad Sanatorium grounds. Finally, sit down to a lunch with bread straight from the oven served with homemade jams, local vegetables and fruit, and tea.
Highlights:
- Bread-making workshop: Visit the home of an experienced Uzbek family baker who, after a welcome drink and snack, will explain the different techniques around this traditional round bread baked in a tandyr oven. Then, she'll take you through the process of making your own dough, kneading it, and getting it ready to rise.
- Jalal-Abad Sanatorium: Visit the Soviet-style sanatorium on the hill outside of Jalal-Abad city as the dough rises. You'll have the option to walk through its pistachio grove, enjoy a panoramic view of the city, drink the mineral water, or even book a massage (not included in price).
- Bread baking and lunch: Shape and decorate the round bread loaves before they go into the tandyr (tandoor) oven to bake. Enjoy eating the bread straight from the oven served together with homemade jams, vegetables and fruit, mash kordo (traditional soup), and other local specialties for lunch.

Plov Cooking Class and Lunch, Jalal-Abad City
Learn how to cook one of the most iconic and famous of all Central Asian dishes - plov (rice pilaf) - in this cooking class in a family home in Jalal-Abad city. You'll start the day with a visit to the local market to learn about and purchase all ingredients needed to make plov. Then, you'll get to work by chopping ingredients and learning this family's secret plov recipe as to why this dish is so unique, delicious and loved in this region. You'll return home not only well fed, but also full of memories and a unique connection to local life and culture.

- Market visit: Learn about the local cuisine as we walk through the bazaar (market) to pick up all the vegetables, meat, spices and other ingredients we need to cook plov.
- Plov cooking class: Jump into the kitchen with a local ethic Uzbek family to chop all the ingredients, and learn all the steps and secrets to make a rich and flavorful plov. Your family host and instructor will show you how to cook and stir the plov over a fire in a traditional outdoor kitchen.
- Family lunch: Enjoy the results of all your efforts by eating the hearty and delicious plov you just made for lunch. Relax in a traditional family setting by sitting on a tapchan (a traditional Central Asian raised table) and learn more about local life and traditions.
